Costs for cooked Talis powered by cheaper vegetables fell 6% in May: Crisis Report

In May 2025, the cost of household cooked vegetarian and non-vegetarians fell 6% year-on-year, according to a Crisil report. The decline is due to a sharp drop in key vegetable prices led by high basic effects.

According to Crisil analysis, tomato prices fell 29% to Rs 23 per kilogram from Rs 33 per kilogram in May 2025, as concerns about yields raised prices last year.

Onion and potato prices fell by 15% and 16%, respectively, and in May, the prices of potatoes rose due to vaccine infections and damage from seasonal rainfall in West Bengal, while onion prices decreased due to lower land footprints of rabi, as the lower rabi ateage and Tropagion, Madharashtra, Madhya Pradesh and karnatak -wathaak -wathaak -athaak -arthaak -arthaak -atarnatak -atarnatak -atarnatak -atarnatak –

Crisil found in its analysis that vegetable oil prices rose 19% year-on-year due to rising import taxes and rising prices of liquefied petroleum cylinders, which further dropped Thali costs in May.

As vegetable prices lowered, broiler prices fell 6% year-on-year, making non-vegetarian thalis cheaper.

“The price of broiler chickens falls – about 50% of the cost of non-vegetarian thali is due to oversupply in the bird flu reported in parts of Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Tilangana and Karnataka, with lower demand,” said Crisil Report.

One month per month, the cost of vegetarian thali remains stable, while the cost of non-vegetarian Thali has dropped by 2% in May 2025.

Potato and tomato prices rose by 3% and 10% in the months, while onions fell by 10%, keeping the cost of vegan Talley the same.

The CRISIL report notes that broiler prices are estimated to fall by 4% per month, resulting in a drop in the cost of non-vegetarian Thali in May.
