The railway project connecting Siliguri to Sikkim will be completed in 2027: CM PREM SINGH TAMANG

In a major step in Sikkim’s infrastructure and tourism industry, Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang announced that the long-awaited railway line connects Sevok in West Bengal with Sikkim, which is expected to be completed in 2027.

The announcement was issued on the last day of Discover Rabong Cho-dzo Fest 2025. Once up and running, the new rail connection will make travel to Himalaya easier and easier to get – whether you are a visitor or a local resident.

In addition to the railway project, CM Tamang has revealed plans for Melli to build Singtam Highway, a crucial route that will further enhance in-state connections. He also confirmed that ongoing maintenance work on National Highway 10 (NH10) is developing steadily.

Once the NH10 is fully upgraded, the travel time between Siliguri and Sikkim may drop to two hours, thus aiding in travel and daily travel.

NFR drives rail infrastructure forward

Meanwhile, the Northeast Border Railway (NFR) has been going all out to upgrade the region's railway infrastructure. Between April 2024 and March 2025, NFR successfully built 11 roads under bridges (Robs) and 26 Roads (Rubs), aiming to improve safety and travel efficiency.

As part of a broader security plan, the NFR also removed 28 manned crossings (MLCs) by establishing a combination of robbery, friction, low-altitude subway (LHS), directly closing some intersections and rescheduling others.

Kapinjal Kishore Sharma, chief public relations officer at NFR, explained that the upgrades were conducted in partnership with several agencies, including the National Highway Administration of India (NHAI), various railway departments, construction departments, construction departments and different state governments.

Sharma notes that these efforts are helping to reshape transportation in Northeast India, making it safer, reduce traffic congestion and delays, and ensure smoother train operations. It is expected to provide a reliable boost to logistics and passenger travel throughout the region.
