Ahmedabad plane crash: Ima urges Tata son to support injured, late medical student

The Gujarat branch of India Medical Association on Saturday urged Tata son to expand financial support to medical students at BJ Medical College, who were injured and killed in an Air India AI-171 crash near Ahmedabad airport.

Several students from the academy attended the country in the incident, which shocked the country and claimed the lives of about 274 people, including on board and on the ground.

After the crash, Tata Group, which owns Air India, announced compensation of Rs 1 crore for those who died in a tragic plane crash.

In a letter to Tata son N Chandrasekaran, the IMA praised the news of Air India’s announcement of compensation and asked the company to provide generous and urgent support to affected medical students and doctors.

“We humbly ask you to consider extending financial aid and necessary support for medical students at the crash site that was injured or killed in this unfortunate event,” the letter reads.

It added: “These people are not only victims, but also the future pillars of our health care system, and their well-being and families deserve similar care and support. Therefore, we seriously ask you to declare immediate help with the medical students who were injured or killed.”

Earlier, two doctors filed a petition in the Supreme Court seeking instructions from the central government to provide adequate compensation to affected medical students.

The request filed on Friday by Dr Saurav Kumar and Dr Dhruv Chauhan urged the SC to direct the central government to announce and reimburse the interim compensation of Rs 5 lakh to the families of all deceased victims, including resident doctors from BJ Medical College.

The petition also seeks guidance from the central government to provide rehabilitation support, including employment opportunities for eligible family members of the deceased, and thoroughly investigate the cause of the crash and take necessary steps to prevent similar incidents in the future.
