Karen Read’s defense team has filed a motion to amend the verdict for murder as jurors return to the courthouse in Dedham, Massachusetts for their deliberations on the first day of Boston Policeman John O’Keefe’s death.

One of her lawyers, David Yannetti, considered the court on Friday, hoping his proposed amendment was deadlocked in Read’s first trial last year, paving the way for a second trial that began on April 22.

The testimony continued for more than 30 days before ending the argument. Judge Beverly spent about an hour reading the jury’s instructions before the jurors began deliberations at about 2:40 p.m. Friday.

Read, 45, is accused of cutting the 46-year-old on the rear passenger side of the 2021 Lexus LX 570 SUV during a snowstorm in January 2021.

He fell backwards, hit his head on the ground at Frozen, and caused a fatal fracture of the skull on the lawn outside another officer’s home, and friends were drinking at a family gathering, according to testimony from the prosecutor.

The defense denied a collision between Red’s vehicle and the victim and suggested that the party’s romantic rival could beat him and put his body where it was found.

Prosecutors claimed Read lashed out in a drunken argument and left him to the ground to die.

According to testimony and text messages read at the trial, the relationship was on the rock when O’Keeffe died.
