Passengers are allowed to pack only sharp objects such as knives and saw blades. Officials identifying hidden objects pointed out an object in the X-ray image that needs further inspection.

“The discovery of these hidden items underscores the importance of our screening procedures and the keen attention our officials to detail,” said the TSA federal security director at Gregory Hawko, North Carolina. “I commend the officer for his keen intuition and dedication to keep all travelers safe.”

TSA officials who check sugar cane offer travelers several options: deliver the cane to his car, place it with a non-travel companion, put it in checked baggage, or voluntarily abandon it at a checkpoint. The traveler chooses to leave the crutches to TSA and continue his journey.

The incident will not affect airport operations or security, ensuring other passengers will not suffer delays or interruptions, the TSA said.
