British director Danny Boyle said he would not command the “slum millionaire” if it were produced due to “cultural occupation” and would rather let the “young Indian filmmaker” do it.

Boyle told The Guardian: “We should do this now. That’s what it should be. It’s time to reflect on it all. We have to look at the cultural luggage we carry and the marks we leave in the world… it felt radical at the time.”

Set in India, the film tells the story of Jamal, a young “slum” chosen to appear in the country’s version of “Who Want to Be a Millionaire?” and hopes to find his childhood love lost, and Latika. In his appearance, events in his turbulent life are shown in flashbacks and help him answer questions.

However, despite its success, the film seems to be controversial due to viewing Indian culture from a Western perspective and portraying India’s stereotypes. Some Indian critics like the film, but some Indian artists are considered “the stereotype of India”,” According to Time magazine.

Boyle added that while the film was in production 15 years ago, he was sensitive to the exploitative implications of using the film as a foreigner at the time.

“We decided that only a few people would go to Mumbai. We would work with a large Indian crew and try to make movies in the culture. But you are still an outsider. It’s still a flawed approach. At some point, this cultural occupation may be approved,” Boyle told The Guardian. ”

He went on to say, “But it’s not possible at other times. I mean, I’m proud of this movie, but you won’t even consider doing something like this today. It won’t even be funded. Even if I’m involved, I’m looking for a young Indian filmmaker to shoot the movie.”
