India's first deep-water transshipment port sails into Kerala
India's first deep-water transshipment port in Vizhinjam has officially launched its operations, marking an important moment in the country's maritime sector. Back in July 2024, the port welcomed its first mother ship MV, San Fernando, which shows it is ready to open.
What makes Vizhinjam even more special is that it is the first green space port project launched by the state government in India. With investments of over Rs 1.8 crore, it is one of the largest port venture capital ever in the country, and they are all built under PPP models.

Why Vizhinjam is important
Located on the main international transport route, Vizhinjam has a great advantage: it can greatly reduce the transit time of the ship. It is a natural deep-water port, and it is built to handle the construction of large cargo and container ships easily – few ports in India can brag about.
The port not only involves cargo and ships, but is expected to bring a significant boost to Kerala's economy. From job creation and investment to turning Kerala into a major trading hub, Vizhinjam will be more intensely linked to Southeast Asia, the Middle East and Africa.
