Zohran Mamdani will have to adapt to it. The Democratic candidate for New York City mayor hasn’t even won the election, but he has become a public enemy of the online enemy, the world of Alpha male influencers and masculine content creators who thrive, they thrive.
Mamdani, 33, a Democratic socialist and state legislator, faces a digital fire from a coalition of conservative commentators, far-right figures and online alpha influencers. These men have built a wide online follower by selling a super-individualist, super-capitalist masculinity and are now gathering their audience around a common goal: Stop the rise of Mamdani.
The attack is deeply racialized, openly Islamophobia and framed it as a battle between the “Western” and the “Eastern.” Mamdani is an Indian-Gugandan and Muslim, known as the “Muslim communist” and is accused of being a Trojan horse of radical anti-American ideology.
Right-wing commentator Charlie Kirk declared on June 30: “New York City is the battlefield of the future of the West.”

Kirk wrote in another article: “He wanted to steal something from others,” Mamdani “was indignant of the rich, white, rich Westerners.”

Kirk has over 5 million followers on X, and his choir is just a voice. Others include Bill Ackman, a supporter of billionaire Trump, who ominously warned: “Look at him and listen to him,” tech investor Chamath Palihapitiya claims that if Mamdani wins, “it’s likely to undermine New York City and lower one of the world’s greatest and greatest New York cities.”

Jack Posobiec, a far-right influencer known for promoting conspiracy theories, released a trailer of a movie filled with violent protest footage and flag-burning images. “Understand New York City is the same trajectory as London,” he wrote, citing a frequently seen animal speaking point: The city will decline under the leadership of the Muslim mayor, just as they claim that London is under Sadiq Khan.

Their goal is clear: to make Zohran Mamdani look dangerous. Use fear, Islamophobia and racialized language to scare New Yorkers, especially white, middle-class moderates, away from candidates who openly talk about wealth redistribution, affordable housing and taxes on billionaires. Not only portraying him as a progressive man, but also a threat to civilization.
This is the classic Manosphere script strategy. Manosphere refers to the vast ecosystem of male influencers, YouTubers and podcast hosts who will profit from dissatisfaction with masculinity, feminism, race and power. It includes figures like Andrew Tate, Sneako and Ben Shapiro and operates by placing progressive politics as an existential threat to men.
In Mamdani, they found a perfect opponent: a young, charismatic, non-white Muslim left with real political momentum.
They laughed at his campaign videos while refusing to address the issues he actually talked about: high rents, public transport, homelessness and the wealth gap in cities. Instead, they publish memes, inflammatory edits, and clips taken from the context to project images of chaos and destruction.

The danger to these online characters is their ability to influence real-world politics. By creating a high-profile enemy, they can consolidate the audience and test their strength. Their strategy is to redefine Mamdani before they can define themselves as a broader voter. When they raised the ghost of New York’s decline, they rarely provided solutions to the real problems of Mamdani’s campaign address, which is primarily the cost of living in the city. Ironically, many of these characters portray themselves as a homemade rich man who is purely trying to succeed.
Mamdani defeated former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo to win the Democratic primary. Since New York is a democratic stronghold, it is very likely that he will win the general election scheduled for November 4. This makes the movement that defines him more pressing now on his opponents.
