An African Union military plane crashes in Somalia’s capital

Mogadishu, Somalia (AP) – A small military aircraft with an African Union peacekeeping mission in Somalia crashed Wednesday at the airport in the capital Mogadishu.

The Somali National News Agency said the plane crashed and caught fire. The agency said on social platform X that the fire “has been under control and authorities are evaluating the situation.”

Somalian authorities did not immediately comment. The number of casualties is unknown.

The African Union peacekeeping mission, known as Australia, is helping Somalia authorities fight the extreme rebels of Al Shabaab, which opposes the existence of foreign troops in the Horn of Africa countries.

The mission includes troops from countries such as Uganda and Kenya.
