Nirav Modi’s brother Nehal Modi arrested in the United States after ED-CBI extradition request

Nehal Modi, the brother of fugitive diamond businessman Nirav Modi, has been arrested by U.S. authorities in a multi-billion-dollar National Bank of Punjab (PNB) fraud case. The U.S. Department of Justice informed Indian officials that the arrest was conducted on July 4, 2025, following a formal extradition request jointly submitted by the Law Enforcement Bureau (ED) and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
Nehal Modi faces extradition on two key charges, according to a complaint filed by U.S. prosecutors: one offence of money laundering under Section 3 of the Money Laundering Act (PMLA) (2002), and one offence of criminal conspiracy under Section 120-B and 201 of the Indian Penal Code.
Nehal Modi is wanted in India for allegedly the role of illegal funds linked to a massive PNB scam, one of the largest bank frauds in the country’s history. ED and CBI surveys show that Nehal Modi uses complex Shell and a cross-border trading network to help Nirav Modi Siphon get rid of the proceeds of crime.
Sources said the next hearing in the extradition case is scheduled to be held on July 17, 2025, when the status quo will be held in the U.S. court. At the hearing, Nehal Modi is expected to apply for bail – the U.S. prosecutor has expressed his opposition.
The arrest marks a significant development in India’s efforts to restore the main defendants in a high-profile financial fraud case. Nirav Modi, who is currently being extradited in the UK, is still in custody.
