Jack Dorsey just released a Bluetooth messaging app that doesn’t require the internet

Jack Dorsey just released a fully functioning through Bluetooth networks . It’s called Bitchat and does not require Internet work because there is no central server.

Twitter co-founders called it an experiment in “Bluetooth Network Networks, Relays, Storage and Forwarding Models, Message Encryption Models, and a few more.” It works by enabling encrypted communication between nearby widgets. Basically, it sends messages directly from one device to another, but each device is also a node and can slightly scale the network.

Thanks to the technology here, Bitchat also does not require Wi-Fi or cellular services. Even if the internet is actively blocked, it aims to keep working. Messages are stored only on the device, and by default they disappear without connecting to a centralized infrastructure. This technology was used in protests in Hong Kong in 2019 to keep communication lines open, although similar applications have been floating for years.

The app allows group chats, can be named with tags and protected with passwords. It can also forward messages to users who are temporarily offline. Future versions of the app will support Wi-Fi Direct to increase network speed and size.

Dorsey has long been a supporter of decentralized communications platforms, just as Bluesky, which emphasizes user control. Bitchat is currently available as a beta version, although it has been filled in.
