“He’s really high in the ball speed. Never seen anything like that,” Sheldon said. “When you’re playing a draw, you can’t see anything like that. When you play him, it’s almost like 2x speed.”

Shelton won his first game against Shelton in 2023 in Shanghai, throwing him 15 sets in a row to Sinner and losing his last six steals. He was approaching sometimes, and he was on Wednesday again, but not close enough.

“I have a lot of game ideas today,” he said. “My service is much better than Australia. It’s smarter. Just working on it. Despite defeating Alcaraz at Wimbledon, Roland-Garros and Sinner, Shelton felt comforted in the efforts of the natural surface Grand Slam.
