Trump threatens new 35% tariffs on Canadian goods, starting August 1

U.S. President Donald Trump has once again attracted his attention to Canada’s positive trade agenda, but new tariff threats.

In a letter to Prime Minister Mark Carney, Trump threatened to pay a 35% tariff “to send Canadian products to the United States, separate from tariffs in all sectors.”

“If for any reason you decide to raise tariffs, no matter the number you choose to raise, it will be added to the 35% we charge.”

The new tariffs will come into effect on August 1.

The letter again cites fentanyl “influx” into the U.S. from Canada, but also cites other complaints, including the trade deficit in the dairy sector and supply management in Canada.

The U.S. government’s own statistics show that earlier this month, a report by the New York think tank Manhattan Institute found that there were few fentanyl entering the U.S. from Canada, which found that 99% of the pills and 97% of the medications were from Mexico in the past decade.

The new threat comes as Canada and the United States negotiate a broader economic and security agreement and negotiate on the target date of July 21.

Canada has dealt with 25% tariffs on steel and aluminum.

Earlier Thursday, industry minister Mélanie Joly vowed to “fight” the tariffs.

In March, Trump imposed a 25% tariff on Canadian goods in March, but a few days later, a major exception to exports that meet the Canada-US Mexico Agreement.
