Archaeologists say they found a “unprecedented” monument in France.
They outlined the discovery on the French website inrap.

They described the discovery as unique, writing: “This kind of monument seems unprecedented and currently no comparison.”

They excavated three areas and discovered settlements “from the Neolithic Age to the First Iron Age”.
The oldest settlement “is a feature of a monument composed of three nested walls… In the center of the monument is a circular shell with a diameter of 11 m. To the north, an 8 m long horseshoe-shaped shell with a circular wall and to the south, an open shell that sanks the central wall,” they wrote.
They added: “The existence of a layer of gravel observed in the filling of the two side walls demonstrates the existence of the fence. The various stratigraphic sections produced indicate that the three shells are modern.”
The statement notes: “Traces of ‘iron oxide’ are observed on the cuffs corresponding to pyrite, which is essential for ignition of fire. This series of objects is usually accompanied by burial, but this hypothesis cannot be confirmed due to their stratigraphic location on the basis of tillage.”
