At least 19 people were injured in Germany’s fair fireworks
Police said at least 19 people were injured in an incident involving the Dusseldorf Expo in Germany, possibly due to the drop of the container.
Four were seriously injured and taken to the hospital. The Düsseldorf Fire Department said one of them had a burn.
Nearly 80 fires and rescue workers were called to the scene Friday night.
According to this information, during the large fireworks display late Friday, one of the fireworks detonated at an altitude of too low for unknown reasons.
A spokesman said it is possible that the tilted launch container will cause the fireworks to fall off at a height that is too low.
Police are investigating the cause of the incident and are conducting a criminal investigation. A police spokesman said the unit currently sees the incident as a tragic accident.
Due to the event, organizers of the largest fair of the Rhine or Düsseldorfer Rheinkirmes (Düsseldorfer Rheinkirmes) ended the celebration.
The organizers said in a statement that they deeply regretted the accident. A spokesman said they will now check whether the expo firework tradition will continue next year.
The fair, which originated from annual celebrations to commemorate the city’s patron saint Apollinaris, began on July 11 and was scheduled to last until Sunday.
