The Washington Post told staff Tuesday that the newspaper’s “third newsroom” known as WP Ventures will undergo significant changes.
Last year, the post announced a vague plan that introduced the “third newsroom” that separates itself from the traditional news and opinions section of the paper and attracts social media users. Less than a year after launch, Krissah Thompson, who runs WP Ventures, took the latest voluntary separation package for the position and will exit the company by the end of this month.
Thompson’s exit coincides with “the next iteration of WP Ventures,” which will be completely separated from the newspaper’s newsroom because “the industry has changed.”

Krissah Thompson will withdraw from the Washington Post by the end of July.
“A year ago, we set out to understand and respond to the evolving dynamics of news, especially within the platform and creators’ space. We officially launched WP Enterprise in January with a focus on reach, relevance and revenue: expanding our presence on social media, expanding our reach on social media, and creating new business opportunities, especially creating efforts for consumers and lifestyles, even as they have been working on it. The memorandum was obtained by Fox News Digital, who insisted that the project “has always been for continuous evolution and has been experimental.”

“It is obvious that in order to operate most effectively in this new environment, we should create a third space with the newsroom and comments on the initial premise. Therefore, the next iteration of WP Ventures will be excluded from the newsroom.”
Chief Strategy Officer Suzi Watford will now oversee WP Ventures.
“Looking forward, we will be fully focused on building personality-oriented content and franchise in theme areas that are interested in our target audience and have strong business opportunities. This could include audio, video, newsletters and events. We will responsibly embrace AI, promoting new stories on new ways and promoting stories on new platforms,” Henig and Thompson wrote.

The memo concluded: “Not all adventures will take this move. The teams that are closely connected with the newsroom will remain in the newsroom. We will meet with all teams in the coming days to discuss the transition plan after Krissah’s departure. We will have more details in the coming weeks and months.”
WP Ventures changes because the position faces unprecedented Exodus in its top talent, low morale and wholesale section.
