Council compromises in “No License” bar shop

The compromise arrangement was announced after the food suppliers had to be licensed to continue working in the bar parking lot in Derby, as required by the City Council.

Many houses complained that the agency intervened after a few years of no problem with stall transactions.

Businesses say sudden changes could seriously affect suppliers and bars that host them.

Now, the Council (who once said it was just following national rules) says that all food stalls can continue to trade and retroactively apply for the correct license.

The committee has said its existing licensing policy has been reviewed and approved at a meeting in September 2024, “before operations, the responsibility of the landowner or merchant is to actively interact with the licensing authority with respect to the landowner or merchant.”

After several businesses spoke about the issues they faced, an authority spokesman said: “While our team complies with national guidelines and our adoption policies, we have never intended to stop local businesses from operating and understand that some traders may not know that there are no consents in the bar parking lot and anticipated parks and in the previous game.

“So we decided to allow traders to continue operations and retroactively apply for correct consent.”

Officials described it as a “one-time grace period” and said other suppliers have obtained the right consent since 2024.

Matthew Willers owns the small brewing company at Darley Abbey, which has an outdoor tap room with parking.

“While I’m glad the Council has taken a quick approach and introduced a piece of grace that allows traders to decide whether to apply when trading, I feel there is a long-term challenge as the licensing committee should seek to lower the price of this consent,” he said.
