The Japan Meteorological Agency escalated an early consultation that originated from a powerful 8.7-magnitude earthquake that struck near Russia’s Kanchitka Peninsula Wednesday morning.

The agency issued consultations on the tsunami of up to three meters along Japan’s Pacific coast, possibly starting to arrive along the northern coast of Japan within less than half an hour after the alarm.

The National Weather Service’s Pacific Tsunami Warning Center also said that the tsunami warning has also expanded to the state of Hawaii, saying that tsunamis from the earthquake could cause damage to the coastline of the Hawaiian Islands.
