Pre-market update (August 1): New US tariffs swing at risk of appetite

Indian stock markets are expected to open as fresh U.S. tariff announcements curb sentiment ahead of key economic data and company revenues.

Global trade tensions escalate

The U.S. plans to impose a 10% base and up to 15% or higher tariffs on countries with trade surpluses by midnight on August 7.

Canada faces a 35% tariff, while Mexico’s tariff implementation has been delayed by 90 days.

This is a 25% tariff on Indian goods, and a threat to further penalties for India’s ties with Russia – a move that India remains firmly opposed, choosing negotiations over retaliation.

Analysts believe that as negotiations continue, the final tariffs may reach a settlement at a lower rate (15-20%).
