6.2 Earthquakes shake Istanbul, Türkiye prompts buildings to evacuate

A 6.2-magnitude earthquake struck Türkiye on Wednesday, shaking Istanbul and prompting people to evacuate buildings.

Türkiye's disaster agency AFAD confirmed the earthquake, and the interior minister said on social media that the agency has begun preliminary field scans to assess the losses. According to Reuters, no reports of damage were reported immediately, but people evacuated the buildings as the earthquake struck.

Reuters quoted broadcaster TGRT as citing a report that a person was injured when he jumped off a balcony during an earthquake, which occurred during a public holiday in Turkey.

According to Afad, the center of the earthquake is located in the Marmara Sea on the Silivri coast about 50 miles west of Istanbul, with a depth of about 4.3 miles. AFAD warns residents on social media not to enter damaged buildings and follows warnings and guidance from local officials.

The USGS report that the shaking shaking can feel the southeast of Bursa, about 97 miles south of Istanbul.

Reuters contributed to the report.
