Australian military recruits are boosted by Tiktok advertising for 15 years

Australia achieved its highest military recruitment figures in 15 years, with officials attributed ads to Tiktok and online games to The Boost.

Defense Personnel Minister Matt Keogh told broadcaster ABC that targeted ads in social media platform Tiktok and targeted ads in online games helped the Australian Defence Force (ADF) achieve its highest recruitment data in 15 years.

Keogh explained that the ads were placed “at our target age group” to showcase a wide range of professions in the military.

The ADF recruited more than 7,000 full-time staff in the 2024-25 fiscal year, the largest since June, while applications rose to over 75,000 in five years, up 28% year-on-year.

The ABC reported that the median age of recruits was 23 years old.

The military’s starting rate also dropped to 7.9%, helping to increase permanent full-time ADF players to over 61,000.

Officials said the Canberra government reached its goal of 69,000 permanent personnel in the early 2030s.

“Australia must have the Defence Forces needed to help protect its strategic interests, which is why we have made significant investments to support our current defence workforce and to grow for the future,” said Defence Secretary Richard Marles.
