Alcaraz leads the Sinners in two sets after third set statement in the U.S. Open final

If the Spaniard lifts the trophy, the Spaniard will return to the world’s number one on Monday

Carlos Alcaraz’s third set in Arthur Ashe Stadium was breathtaking, holding the U.S. Open against Jannik Sinner.

After the world number one and defending champion won the second set, Alcalaz quickly led 6-2, 3-6, 6-1 in Sunday’s final. Alcaraz, who dropped the first five games of the third inning through any level of the great rival, now faces an uphill battle to defend his title.

The world’s No. 1 sinner largely surpassed the game in the opening scene at Arthur Ashe Stadium, but he hit a clean hit barrage on his second shot. Espanyol played for the third consecutive third meeting in the Grand Slam final, but he couldn’t keep it long enough to avoid throwing away a set for the first time at the 2025 U.S. Open.

Those who win the trophy in New York will also ensure they are ranked No. 1 in the PIF ATP rankings on Monday. Sina has maintained its highest point for 65 consecutive weeks, and Alcaraz is now within New York’s second title, with his goal to return to his last position in September 2023.

Sinner, who was in a 27-game streak in Hard-Court professional competition, is bidding to be the seventh man in the Open era, winning three Grand Slam singles titles in the same season. The Australian Open and Wimbledon champions have become the youngest man in the Open, with all four professional finals in a season: The Sinner also made it to the finals of Roland Garros, where he earned three title points before falling into Alcaraz in the historic classic.

Meanwhile, Alcaraz chases his sixth Grand Slam crown, which will be the second youngster in the open era after Bjorn Borg. This is the second time the 22-year-old Spaniard has also competed against the world’s No. 1 U.S. Open Championship: In 2022, he beat Casper Ruud to lift his first major trophy and became the youngest No. 1 in history for the 19-year-old PIF ATP rankings.

All of this adds up

After about 50 minutes of the final delay due to safety measures in Flushing Meadows, Alcaraz wasted very little time to control his latest competition with Sinner. Espanyol took the ball very early when he returned from the opening game, and his attitude seemed to be a sprint sinner, who made a non-characteristic nine uncompulsory mistakes in the opening scene alone.

Instead of making any obvious tactical changes to the engineers in the second set, the 24-year-old sinner started to eliminate Alcaraz in baseline exchanges and stood out in Game 5. But there was nothing he could do to prevent Alcaraz from entering the third set, when Espanyol took 11 winners.
