Chandrapuram Ponnuswamy Radhakrishnan was sworn in as India’s 15th vice president at a ceremony held in Rashtrapati Bhavan on Friday. According to the News Information Bureau (PIB), President Droupadi Murmu was sworn in with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Trade Union Minister, Senior Leader and former Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar.

Prime Minister Modi, who attended the ceremony, congratulated Radhakrishnan and hoped that he would succeed during his tenure. In an article on X, he described the new vice president as a “dedicated civil servant” who devoted his life to national construction, social service and strengthening democratic values.

The event is marked by interior minister Amit Shah, defense minister Rajnath Singh and opposition leaders. Radhakrishnan was sworn in in English. Jagdeep Dhankhar also made his first public appearance since his sudden resignation as Vice President in July.

After Dhankhar’s resignation, elections for the vice president’s office were held on September 9, citing health reasons. National Democratic League (NDA) candidate Radhakrishnan voted 452 votes against opposition candidates, and former Supreme Court Justice B Sudershan Reddy investigated, who made 300 votes out of 767 legislators, 752 votes were valid and 15 votes were invalid. According to the Election Commission, more than 98% of MPs participated in the poll.

Ladakrishnan’s political career

Born in Tiruppur, Tamil Nadu, in 1957, Radhakrishnan has had a long association with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), which he joined at the age of 16. As a BJP candidate, he made his electronical debug in 1998 when he won the Coimbatore Lok Sabha seat, which he repeated in 1999. He later led a 93-day yatra to solve the problems of river links, ending untouchable performance and combating terrorism. In the past, Radhakrishnan also served as governor of Jharkhand and then in 2024.

Dhankhar resigns by citing health reasons

Jagdeep Dhankhar took office in August 2022 and resigned in July this year for medical reasons. Although speculation about political factors has started the impact, he clarified that his decision is based solely on health. As vice president, Radhakrishnan served for five years. His main role is to host Rajya Sabha as chairman. He will also serve as President of India when he is vacant in the event of death, resignation or removal of incumbents.
