Brewing elasticity: Pioneer Insurance, Nestlé authorized by Sultan Kudalat

The Insurance Initiative is the latest Coffee+ Plan, the current banner section of the Nestlé Nescafé program, a long-term plan involving the public and private sectors that help smallholder coffee farmers sustainably improve production, income and quality of life.

“It’s not just about paper policy,” said Geric Laude, head of agriculture and partnerships at Pioneer Insurance. “We met with farmers, listened to their needs and made the protection where most important places are easier to access: on the ground.”

Project Coffee+ is an intensive, years of effort that enables participating farmers to become entrepreneurs and empowers them with effective agricultural knowledge and practices as well as basic business skills.

The result is a significant increase in harvest and income, leading to the launch of Project Coffee++, focusing on helping to cultivate younger generations of coffee farmers in Mindanao, where 80% of the country’s coffee is grown in Kudarat and Bukidnon in Sudan.

The local coffee sub-sector faces a major challenge, with output providing only 15% of domestic demand for imported fill. Therefore, crop insurance for coffee farmers is an important step in enhancing their capabilities and subsectors.

Pioneer’s agricultural team shared its commitment to sustainable agriculture and inclusive growth, connecting with Nestlé with farmers’ communities and introducing the concept of crop insurance in mid-2024.

On-site visits and direct dialogue play a crucial role in determining how insurance supports farmers’ long-term goals under regenerative agriculture or RA approaches that protect agricultural resources to promote future productivity, taking into account climate change.

The pioneer has provided groundbreaking inclusion insurance solutions for underserved groundbreaking insurance solutions for years. By Card Pioneer Microinsurance, Inc. , it launched Binhi Crop Insurance in 2017, which is the first and only micro-agricultural insurance product in the country.

With the support of the Asian Development Bank, Pioneer and Greeting Card Pioneer made history in 2022 by establishing the Philippines’ first public private crop insurance partnership with Philippine Crop Insurance Corporation.

In January 2024, the Pioneer formed its agricultural team to further narrow the protection gap in the agricultural industry. Since then, it has launched insurance products for cereals (rice and corn); high-value crops, including coffee, cocoa, mango, sugar cane, etc.; and livestock to protect farmers from the risks of climate change caused by global warming.

Nestlé’s latest efforts are based on pioneering momentum, showing that insurance is relevant and community-oriented insurance that can be a tool for real transformation.
