Casper Ruud and Jakub Mensik took a 2-0 lead in a contrasting lead at the Laver Cup on Friday.
The Norwegians showed their advantage in defeating American Reilly Opelka, who was a big service, with Mensik hitting Alex Michelsen 10-8 at Alex Michelsen 6-1, 6-7 (3).
Ruud revealed that he was showing off a slightly smaller racket head, which was very consistent after his delivery. According to Infosys ATP Stats, he won 88% of his first-place score (45/51) and removed the two breakout points he faced. Opelka won only 16% of his return trip, while Ruud’s 28%.
“this [goal was] “To get into the area, play a lot of balls, let him play and make Europe stand out. Last year, I was in the same position and lost the opening ceremony, so it’s nice to take revenge and start getting strong for Europe.”
Mensik survived a late panic with Team World Michelsen. Mensik lost the game 6-1, 5-3 in the game and needed to complete the victory in the tiebreak.
Both players improved their own levels as the game progressed, but the Czech team quickly jumped to a 4/0 lead in the game to reduce the upgrade for the Americans and European teams. Michelsen showed his competitive spirit, pulling it with a score of 7/8. Mensik thrived on Michelsen’s backhand ad, whose first match point converted his first match.
“Great game,” Mensick said. “We’ve known each other since junior year, so we’ve learned a lot on the court. With this format, the game snatched the game in the third game, it’s always difficult for you to nervous, but I’m glad I’ve been focusing on until the end, I’ve been fighting. I’ve been fighting. I’m glad my team helped my point of view.”
Friday’s evening meeting will feature Flavio Cobolli and Joao Fonseca. Then Carlos Alcaraz and Mensik competed against Taylor Fritz and Michelsen.
