Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard scored two major breakthroughs in a battle at the Rolex Shanghai Masters on Sunday.
The Frenchman made the world’s fourth-ranked Taylor Fritz beat the biggest win in the PIF ATP ranking 6-4, 7-5. In a one-hour, 25-minute victory at Qizhong Forest Sports City Arena, Mpetshi Perricard caused painful losses for Fritz in two games at Wimbledon, who also booked his spot 1,000 in the fourth round of the ATP Masters.

Despite Perricard’s win in a row, the wet conditions in Shanghai made Sunday’s encounter with major physical tests on both players. This is the ability of the French to capitalize at critical moments, especially when Fritz is tired at the end of the game, which is crucial.
Mpetshi Perricard broke the opponent’s serve in the dramatic Game 11 of the second set, and Fritz let Fritz give the 30/0 lead to struggle to exit the winner in slow conditions. According to Infosys ATP Stats, World No. 37 successfully won the victory, in which he launched 12 Aaces and did not face a breakthrough point.

Mpetshi Perricard’s next opponent will be another promising Torino Holger Rune, who also achieved Sunday’s success in Shanghai. Dane, the tenth seed, survived the tricky conditions, making Ugo Humbert 6-4, 6-4 reach the fourth round for the second consecutive year.
With his victory, the 22-year-old Rune beat the same opponent for the first time in his career. He led Humbert 5-0 in the Lexus ATP Head2head series, with two wins in 2025 (Willes, India, Shanghai).
When asked about the humidity in Shanghai, Rune said, “We are all Europeans, so we are not used to this kind of weather yet, but I just told myself that it is the same for him, I just have to stay strong.” “Focus on my serve. Push when it matters, and try to save some energy when it matters.
“I think I did a good job today, let him work at the same time, let him run because both of us were feeling more difficult when we were running in this weather.
Gabriel Diallo and Zizou Bergs also made progress in other early Sunday matches. Diallo advanced after his rival David Goffin retired after he trailed 0-3 in the first set. Canada’s next opponent will be Bergs, who overcomes the 19th seed Francisco Cerundolo 7-6 (1), 6-3.
