Switzerland’s Belinda Bencic continued a strong start to the new season with a straight-sets win over Argentina’s Solana Serra in the Fed Cup quarter-finals in Perth on Wednesday, helping Switzerland take a 1-0 lead.
Bencic, ranked 11th in the WTA Tour Drive by Mercedez-Benz rankings, broke in the third game of the first set. The same was true in the second set. Bencic broke serve again in the third and seventh games, sealing the victory 6-2, 6-2 in 1 hour and 17 minutes.
The 28-year-old has now won all three singles matches in the Fed Cup in straight sets, beating France’s Leolia Jean and Italy’s Jasmine Paolini in the group stages. She also won two mixed doubles matches this week.
Bencic took maternity leave at the end of the 2024 season, and his year-end ranking soared from 421st in early January to 11th. She won titles in Abu Dhabi and Tokyo and reached the semifinals at Wimbledon.
Switzerland will look to reach the semi-finals when three-time Grand Slam champion Stan Wawrinka takes on Sebastian Baez in the second singles match.
