Is Lorenzo Musetti ready to finally end his nearly four-year wait for an ATP Tour title at this week’s Bank of China Hong Kong Open?
The top-seeded Italian took another step forward on Friday, beating local favorite Coleman Wong 6-4, 6-4 to seal a spot in the semifinals. Musetti, who has not won an ATP Tour title since winning two in 2022, can now look forward to a meeting with former Hong Kong champion Andrey Rublev.
“I knew I had to be very, very solid from the start,” said Musetti, who improved to 2-0 in the Lexus ATP Head2Head Series against Huang. “It was a very close race but I stayed really focused until the end. So I’m really happy and proud to get off to a good start in 2026.”
According to Infosys ATP statistics, Rublev hit 22 winners and saved the only break point he faced against Nuno Borges 6-3, 6-4. Third seed Rublev won his only meeting with Musetti in Dubai in 2020, but the Italian has improved significantly since then.
“I’m happy to be back in the semifinals in Hong Kong,” said Rublev, the 2024 champion. “Lorenzo has played unbelievably over the last few years and he’s getting better and better. When I first played him he was very young so it didn’t really matter. I need to be really prepared if I want to have a chance to have a good fight.”
In addition to reaching a career-high No. 6 in the 2025 PIF ATP Rankings, Musetti has reached the finals three times. He dropped two championship points against Alejandro Tabilo in Chengdu and later lost to Novak Djokovic in a grueling three-hour final in Athens.
