Will it be third time luck for Poland when they play in the Confederations Cup final in Sydney on Sunday?

Led by Hubert Hurkacz and Iga Swiatek, the two-time runners-up will take on the Swiss and seal the new title. Switzerland’s charge was driven by Belinda Bencic, who was flawless in both singles and mixed doubles, with captain Stan Wawrinka providing leadership and experience in the three-time Grand Slam champion’s final season on tour.

The match will start at 5:30pm at the Ken Rosewall Arena, with Bencic taking on Swiatek, followed by Wawrinka taking on Hulkac. The Poles won their only Lexus ATP Head2Head encounter at the 2023 Fed Cup.

Defending Wimbledon champion Swiatek holds a 5-1 advantage in head-to-head meetings with Bencic, despite the Swiss having been in fine form in both Sydney and Perth. The 28-year-old, who is unbeaten in four singles matches and is mother to 21-month-old daughter Bella, has been a cornerstone of the team and Swiatek will be eager to respond after losing to Coco Gauff in straight sets in the semi-finals.

“Stan pushed me through in the singles, then he tried to push himself through in the singles, and then he pushed us across the line in the mixed game,” Bencic said of captaining Wawrinka. “I don’t know what to say. This is awesome.”

Wawrinka faces a tough task against the powerful Hurkacs on serve, especially on the return. The 40-year-old broke serve just once in his four games and adopted a more defensive game plan to claim just one win. By comparison, Hulkac hit 77 aces on his way to the final.

“It’s going to be a fun game against Stan,” Hurkach said. “He showed some amazing tennis throughout the tournament. Obviously this is his last year on tour. It’s really inspiring to watch him play, to watch him compete. It’s going to be a fun challenge. There’s a lot of positive emotions. It’s great that we’re in the finals again.”

Huckach looked sharp in Sydney after a seven-month off-season due to injury that required knee surgery. The former PIF ATP No. 6 already has wins over top-10 rivals Alexander Zverev and Taylor Fritz, who defeated him in the final tie-break to secure last year’s Fed Cup title.

With both teams evenly matched, the final will likely come down to mixed doubles. Switzerland’s Bencic and Jakub Paul are unbeaten in four games, while Poland’s Katarzyna Kawa and Jan Zielinski also have the same record.
