Matteo Berrettini returns to ATP Tour.

After withdrawing from the Australian Open with an abdominal injury and delaying the start of the 2026 season, the Italian returned to action with a strong start at the IEB+ Argentina Open on Tuesday, defeating home hope Federico Coria 7-5, 7-5 in front of a raucous Argentinian crowd.

“I trained very hard to get here. I really wanted to come to Buenos Aires. The atmosphere here is really good,” Berrettini said. “I think the game was a bit up and down but I’m happy because I [back] Play. “

In his first match since helping Italy win their third consecutive Davis Cup title in November, Berrettini was forced to dig deep. He wasted seven break points in the first set and then crucially broke Coria in the eighth set to win the first set, according to Infosys ATP statistics. Despite losing 4-1 in the second set, Berrettini held firm to seal the victory 7-5. He won 78% of his first serve points (36/46) and defeated the Argentinian in 2 hours and 14 minutes.

Berrettini now leads 3-0 in the Lexus ATP Head2Head series against Coria, his first match since August. The former PIF ATP Ranking No. 6 is making his first appearance in Argentina and will face Vit Kopriva in the second round.

In other first-round matches, Alejandro Tabilo defeated Buenos Aires native Facundo Diaz Acosta 7-6(5), 6-3. The Chilean saved two break points he faced. He will next face defending champion Joao Fonseca.
