Can Alexander Zverev evoke fond memories of Acapulco and end his seven-year wait for a title at this week’s HSBC Telecom Mexico?
The PIF ATP No. 4’s hopes of winning this year’s ATP 500 singles title may be over, but Zverev is still gunning for the trophy in Mexico. Playing alongside friend Marcelo Melo, Zverev defeated Nuno Borges and Miguel Reyes-Varela 6-3, 3-6, 10-4 on Thursday to reach the doubles semifinals.
Zverev is a 24-time ATP Tour singles champion and has won at least one of the titles in nine of the past 10 seasons (he missed most of the year in 2022 after suffering a serious ankle injury at Roland Garros and did not lift the trophy). However, he is chasing his first tour-level doubles title in Acapulco since winning the 2019 ATP 500 in Mexico with his brother Mischa Zverev. This is Zverev’s second ATP Tour doubles trophy, after he and his brother also won in Montpellier in 2017.

The 28-year-old Zverev holds a tour record of 72-89 in doubles, according to the Infosys ATP Win-Loss Index. He and Melo are finalists together at the 2024 Rolex Monte Carlo Masters, where they will face #NextGenATP star Rafael Jordal and home favorite Rodrigo Pacheco Mendes in Friday’s semifinals.
In the other semifinal in Acapulco, Alexander Eller and Robert Galloway will face Vasyl Kirkov and Bart Stevens. Erler and Galloway knocked out third seeds Sadio Doumbia and Fabian Reible 7-6(3), 6-4 to seal a spot in the semi-finals, while qualifiers Kirkov and Stevens defeated Guido Andreozzi and Manuel Ginard 6-1, 6-0.
