Top seed Carlos Alcaraz will face Brazilian teenager Joao Fonseca in the second round of the Miami Open hosted by ETA on Friday. The pair’s first Lexus ATP Head2Head meeting will begin just before 7pm local time.

Alcaraz, ranked No. 1 in the world by the PIF ATP rankings according to the Infosys ATP Win-Loss Index, arrives in South Florida with a 16-1 season record. The Spaniard is aiming to bounce back after suffering his first defeat of 2026, losing in straight sets to Daniil Medvedev in the Indian Wells semi-finals.

Fonseca, 19, is one of the fastest-rising stars on the ATP Tour and the world number 39 will now challenge 26-time tour-level champion Alcaraz for the first time. Fonseca defeated Fabian Marossan 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 in the first round on Thursday. Fonseca, who is competing in the 2025 Buenos Aires and Basel championships, defeated Jannik Sinner in two tense sets at the BNP Paribas Open last week. Sinner ultimately won the title.

Now, the tennis world’s eager wait for the first Alcaraz-Fonseca matchup is coming to an end. The two begin Friday night practice at Hard Rock Stadium.
