Karolina Muchova Show timely supplies to earn a victory worth celebrating.
Muchova knocks down her opponent’s shot, taps a shot away, and knocks her opponent away Victoria Mboko 7-5, 7-6(5), ensuring she reached the Miami Open semifinals for the first time.
No. 13 seed Muchova will face American opponent Fourth seed Coco Gauff or No. 12 seed Haley Baptistecompeting for a spot in the finals.
The match was a rematch of the final in Doha six weeks ago.
In Doha, past title setbacks inspired Muchova to soar to the most important title of her life.
Muchova, the 14th seed, won five of her last six games to defuse a red-hot situation Mboko 6-4, 7-6, winning her first career WTA 1000 title in Doha. This run to the Miami semifinals marks the first time Muchova has reached the WTA 1000 semifinals twice in the same season, and it’s even better.
In today’s rematch, Muchova got the only break of serve and led 6-5. Muchova converted the third set point into a quality first set.
After falling behind 4-5 in the second set, Muchova first served out of bounds, then made a tricky spike winner to save the set point, and finally tied the score after 10 games.
In response to the Canadian’s forehand winner, Muchova made three forehand errors and led the tiebreaker 4-0. Muchova hit a forehand to chase the score to 5-2 and won the match point 6-4.
On her second match point, Muchova read Mboko’s lob, surged forward and responded with a bunt to end the match at one hour, 47 minutes.
Muchova’s record this season improved to 18 wins and 3 losses.
