After widespread interruption, most of Spain's power supplies are largely restored

Spain's National Electric Power Company said earlier on Tuesday that almost all of its electricity in the country has been restored, mainly ending major power outages that affect airports, trains, traffic lights and other critical infrastructure.

The company Red Eléctrica said there is 99% electricity demand on the Spanish Peninsula and that all substations on the grid are operating at 6 a.m. local time, with power off for nearly 18 hours on Monday.

Spanish Peninsula Spain includes the territory of the Iberian Peninsula on the vast majority of the country's territory, and the power outage also hit nearby Portugal.

Portugal's electricity and gas supplier said late Monday that it had recovered 85 of 89 substations and switched sites that power the country's power grid. But some areas are still in the dark, it said.

The cause of the power outage is tens of millions stranded on the Iberian Peninsula, but it was still unknown earlier Tuesday, although officials said there were no signs of fouls, such as cyber attacks.

This is a developing story.
