Drone strikes Kief and Moscow, Putin plans World War II parade
At least two people were killed after a fierce battle between Ukraine and Russia – a drone strikes Kiev and Moscow.
The battle was a day ahead of scheduled parades in the Russian capital to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II – President Vladimir Putin proposed a three-day ceasefire that coincides with the event.
Ukraine has not agreed to the proposal and has pushed for a truce that lasts at least 30 days.
Kiev Mayor Vitali Klitschko said on Telegram messaging app that two people were killed in the Ukrainian capital.
This was the third night Moscow was targeted by drones, prompting another shutdown of four airports in the city for hours.
Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said on social media that Russian air defense forces destroyed at least 14 Ukrainian drones after 22:00 (20:00 bst) local time. No damage.
In Kyiv, drone debris triggered fires in apartments and other buildings in three areas.
Mayor Krichko said the two people who died were in a residential building in the Shevickiki Island area that was hit by debris from drone strikes.
He also said on social media that there were four children who were injured and seven.
Last month, the Kremlin announced a temporary ceasefire from May 8 to 10, which coincides with Moscow's planned victory on European anniversary.
The city was scheduled to hold a parade on May 9 to commemorate the success of the Soviet Union and allies against Nazi Germany during World War II. This year marks its 80th anniversary and will participate in the event of world leaders, including China's XI Jinping.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky called the proposed ceasefire “meaningless.” Instead, it offered at least 30 days of unconditional ceasefire in the U.S. proposal launched in March.
The previous Easter ceasefire collapsed repeatedly, with Russia and Ukraine accusing each other of multiple violations.
