Trump plans to close consumer product safety committee

In the latest blow to a usually functional government, President Donald Trump hopes to eliminate independent agencies responsible for issuing recalls and protecting U.S. citizens from harmful products. According to the joint letter from the Councillor, the Office of Management and Budget recommends that the responsibility of the Consumer Product Safety Committee should be folded into “a non-existent department within the Department of Health and Human Services”. It seems that the process begins, Trump has fired three Democrats on the committee, no reason Washington Post Report.

After meeting with the government's efficiency department, Commissioners Mary Boyle and Richard Trumka Jr. received an email on May 8 informing them that they had been fired. The third commissioner, Alexander Hoehn-Saric, was not previously fired, but shared in a May 9 statement that the committee's acting chairman “blocks [him] From execution [his] Responsibilities. ”

Commissioners of institutions such as the CPSC, FCC or FTC are appointed by the president and approved by the Senate, and usually serve full term. The removal commissioner asked the president to determine that they had neglected their duties or were reliably charged with wrongdoing.

Since Trump took office, the standards of constitutional protection have not been a concern for him. Democratic members of the FTC said they were illegally fired in a similar manner in March and are now suing the U.S. government. CPSC Commissioner Trumka announced that he plans to bring the case to court as well. The U.S. Supreme Court is considering a case that can decide whether Trump can actually fire an independent agency, but we are not in a dilemma until this judgment is reached.

Eliminating the CPSC or at least its Democratic wing means businesses will have much less scrutiny of the products they sell. Many companies hope not to deal with the hassle of recalls and fines. Amazon even proposed in March that the CPSC was too powerful, calling the institution a “unconstitutional construction.” Under the Trump administration, these complaints are clearly being heard and taken to take action.
