Alex de Minaur kept alive his hopes of qualifying for the Nitto ATP Finals before ending Taylor Fritz’s final in Turin on Thursday, beating the American 7-6(3), 6-3 in the Jimmy Connors Group.

De Minaur, who suffered a three-set defeat to Lorenzo Musetti on Tuesday night, knows he must beat Fritz in straight sets if he has any chance of reaching the semi-finals of the prestigious year-end event.

De Minaur produced an impressive offensive performance over a nervous Fritz to end the round robin stage with a 1-2 record. If world number one Carlos Alcaraz, who has already qualified, beats Lorenzo Musetti on Thursday night, De Minaur will join the Spaniard in the semi-finals. Musetti will advance to the semi-finals if he defeats Alcaraz. Last year’s finalist Fritz also went 1-2 in the round-robin stage, but was eliminated.

De Minaur currently holds a 6-5 lead over Fritz in the Lexus ATP Head2Head Series, marking the Australian’s first win at the Nitto ATP Finals, having previously gone 0-3 in 2024.

When Fritz reached match point, the seventh seed had a chance to seal the victory at 2-5 with Fritz’s serve. The American held on for the win, but unlike Tuesday night’s match against Musetti, De Minaur kept his nerve on serve and emerged victorious. After winning, he celebrated by raising his fist to the crowd, a stark contrast to the scene at the Inalpi Arena 40 hours earlier.

Fritz has great memories in Turin, where he reached the final last season. The sixth seed defeated Musetti in the first match of this year’s tournament before losing to Alcaraz in three sets. The 28-year-old struggled in an hour and 35-minute match against De Minaur, failing to recover after losing serve early. Fritz made 33 unforced errors and scored only 67% of his first-serve points, lower than the 84% he scored against Musetti and the 71% he scored against Alcaraz.

Fritz finished the season with a 53-23 record, according to the Infosys ATP Win-Loss Index. The Americans won grass-court titles at Eastbourne and Stuttgart.
