Almost twice as much as a trip by France
According to new analysis, taking a train is faster than some short excursions in France.
In 2023, France introduced a ban on domestic short-haul flights, with a railway replacement for less than two and a half hours. It was brought in to curb carbon emissions, but swapping the plane for a train could also be cheaper, and the choice proved to be faster.
Research from Trainline compared five national journeys that quickly disappeared and found that some cities traveled twice as fast as rail transportation by choosing.
Some cities in France are almost twice as fast as trains as planes
According to the train line data, taking a 2.5-hour journey instead of a plane may significantly reduce travel time.
Railway booking companies use their own data to calculate Train Tour Time and cost and data from the airline booking comparison website Skyscanner, used for airplane travel time and cost.
The difference in travel time is mainly because the choice of rail transport means avoiding the waiting time required for long safety checks and flights.
“While the duration of the flight usually seems to be favorable, it does not reflect the (actual) duration of the air travel, including travel to the airport, waiting for boarding and security checks, and delays related to check-in and check-in,” Trainline said.
Some inter-urban trips in France can almost double quickly train Like an airplane, research has found.

“The railway station, ideally located in the heart of the city, is well arranged by public transport, allowing travelers to reduce the number of additional journeys.”
“Even considering the 30-minute advance time (arrival time) train Operators, this is still a more efficient option for flights that increase total travel time than remote infrastructure. ”
Train line numbers also indicate that the cost of train travel may be much lower than Airplane travelalso. Flying is 1.8 times more expensive than trains on average.
Traveling between Paris and Lyon means savings of up to 40 euros, while Marseille cuts travel costs by train.
Railway travel emissions are nearly 100 times less than flight
The findings seem to support France's decision as well Short domestic flights are prohibited.
Theoretically, the regulation means that, in addition to connecting flights, it is impossible to make any possible journey by train in less than two and a half hours.
These changes are part of France Climate Law 2021 and was originally proposed by French Citizens on Climate Conference – Citizens' Congress Responsible for finding ways to reduce the country's carbon emissions.
Train line studies have found that the carbon footprint of a train may be 124 to 151 times lower than that of an aircraft. These data consider emissions emitted by both modes of transport, as well as those used by travelers.
For example, the company calculated that the amount of carbon dioxide per person flying from Paris to Lyon was more than 90 kilograms, while the same journey of the train emitted only 0.690 kilograms.
However, in fact, the flight ban Not to reduce emissions sharp.
The Civil Aviation Administration of France (DGAC) estimates that new regulations can reduce emissions by 55,000 tons, just 2.6% of the total emissions of domestic flights in France each year.
