Amazon from Lima to Peru capsized buses on Andes highway, killing at least 18

Lima, Peru (AP) – A bus from Lima to Peruvian Amazon was overturned on a highway in the Andes, with at least 18 people killed and 48 injured, authorities said Friday.

Junin’s health director Clifor Curipaco told reporters that the double-decker bus of the “Molina Reed International” company on the hillside of the Palca region, which belongs to the Palca region, fell off the hillside. Authorities are still investigating the cause of the accident.

Videos aired on local TV show the buses split into two parts while firefighters and police attempt to rescue the injured.

This is not the first fatal bus accident in 2025, and another bus fell into a river on January 3, killing six people and injuring 32 people.

A study by the Attorney General’s Office found that the reckless and excessive speed of the D River was the main cause of accidents in Peru.

Peruvian authorities have poor monitoring of road transport, and emergency aid is so slow and chaotic. According to official data from the Death Information System, in 2024, approximately 3,173 people died due to traffic accidents in South American countries.
