Unseeded Andrei Goransson and Alex Michelson advanced to the Rolex Shanghai Masters final on Friday, defeating top seeds Marcelo Arevalo and Matt Pavic 7-6(2), 2-6, 10-7.
In a match that lasted 1 hour and 41 minutes, the first-time pair went 0-for-7 on break points, including 0-for-5 in the first set. Although Goransson was broken in the fourth and eighth games of the second set, they regrouped in the tie-break.
Goranson/Michelson led 3-0 in the tiebreaker of the deciding game. After Arevalo/Pavich tied the score to 3-3, both teams maintained their serve until Arevalo double faulted at 7-8. Arevalo then hit a forehand wide on match point to send the Swedes and the Americans into the final.
“Just three or four days before I went to the Laver Cup, he texted me and I was like, why not?” Michelsen said of how they worked together. “Now we’re in the finals.”
Goransson is the first Swede to reach a doubles final in the tournament’s history (since 2009) and will attempt to become the first Swede to win the ATP Masters 1000 doubles title since Cincinnati’s Robert Linster (with Horia Tikao) in 2012. Goransson will participate in the ATP Masters 1000 final for the first time and the eighth final in his career (3-4). His last title came in April in the 500 class championship with Sem Verbeek in Munich. His other titles were won at Newport last year (also with Verbeek) and in Pune in 2020 (with Christopher Rungkat).
“It feels great, it’s my first Masters 1,000m final, so obviously I’m really, really excited,” Goransson said. “The final moments were very nerve-wracking, but it was great to get the win.”

Michaelson is the first American player to reach the Shanghai doubles final since John Isner and Jack Sock won the title in 2016. This is the third career ATP Tour final for the 21-year-old Californian (0-2), after losing in Stuttgart in June (with Rajiv Ram) and last year at the Cincinnati ATP Masters 1000 (with Mackenzie McDonald).
“It feels really good,” Michelson said. “This is the team I lost to in the finals in Cincinnati last year and it’s great to beat these guys, they’re really good and we’re excited for the challenge in the finals.”
Goransson and Michelson will face third-seeded Kevin Kravitz and Tim Puiz, or substitutes Guido Andreozzi and Manuel Guinard. Germany will face Argentina/France in Saturday’s semi-finals.
