Wednesday was a landmark day for Andrea Pellegrino at the BCI Seguros Chile Open, where he fought hard to secure a victory he won’t soon forget.
The 28-year-old defeated seventh seed Francisco Comesana 7-6(3), 6-7(3), 6-3 on clay at the ATP 250 after losing match point in a tense second set. With the victory, the Italian qualifier reached the quarterfinals at tour level for the first time.
“It was a very difficult game,” Pellegrino said. “A great fight. I want to say thank you to my friends who came out to support me. Without them it would have been very difficult. Their support has been amazing.”
In his first Lexus ATP showdown with the Argentinian, Pellegrino squandered a match point at 5-2 in the second set and then lost serve in the next game. But he rallied, breaking serve twice in the deciding set and winning the biggest win of his career in 2 hours and 51 minutes.
Pellegrino won the doubles title in San Diego in 2023 with Andrea Vavassori and is currently ranked a career-high No. 123 in the PIF ATP Live Rankings. The Italian will face Mariano Navone or second seed Luciano Dadri in the quarter-finals.
Earlier, Yannick Hanfmann defeated fourth seed Camilo Hugo Carabelli 6-4, 6-3 in the second round. The 34-year-old scored 10 of his 13 points in the 96-minute victory. With this win, he became the fourth player in the tournament’s history to reach the quarterfinals at least three times, joining Sebastian Baez, Laszlo Djere and Thiago Monteiro.
