Albuquerque, New Mexico (AP) – Albuquerque police said another teenager was arrested on Wednesday for murder and other charges targeting cyclists.
Detectives learned that the boy was the fourth suspect in the stolen car when he killed 63-year-old physicist Scott Dwight Habermehl, who was riding a bicycle to work at Sandia National Laboratories.
The teenagers arrested Wednesday at the time of the May 2024 crash were 15. Others include a boy who just turned 11 and two teenagers.
Videos of the crash were recorded from inside the car and distributed on social media. The person reported to authorities earlier this year, including the middle school principal after a student marked it.
During the investigation, several people told detectives that they recognized the voice of the fourth suspect when the video was posted on social media. The teen denied it was a car in an earlier interview with police, but detectives learned that he shared details about the crash and police investigation through social media conversations.
The Associated Press does not usually name people under the age of 18 to be charged with crimes.
The case was highlighted by Democratic New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham, as well as Republican lawmakers and prosecutors, who begged the Democratic-led legislature to resolve juvenile crimes across the state. Despite vows to do so, the governor has not held a special meeting to bring lawmakers back to consider the new legislation.
