Rain floods Pakistani cities, evacuating, killing dozens of them

Officials said that after hours of heavy rains flooded the main cities and killed more than 50 people, Pakistani rescue workers and soldiers evacuated thousands of people from flooded communities on Thursday.

Rescue Ministry spokesman Farooq Ahmad said about 15,000 rescue workers supported by army helicopters and 800 ships are saving people’s time with flooded villages and cities in central Punjab.

The worst case scenario was in the downtown Rawalpindi near the capital Islamabad, where helicopters rescued people on the roof after the stream was flooded into residential areas.

The National Disaster Agency said more than 50 people died in the past 24 hours of rainwater and flood-related incidents, killing to 180 since late last month.

The agency added that most of the deaths occurred due to collapse of walls and roofs, as the old structure continued to collapse after heavy monsoon rains.

The Ministry of Meteorology warned that heavy rains in July and August would cause rivers, flash floods and flooding.

Pakistan is a country with a population of more than 240 million and is one of the most vulnerable countries to impact climate change, according to the United Nations.

Every year, hundreds of people are killed by disasters caused by climate in the country, and thousands lose their homes and livelihoods.

In 2022, record floods killed more than 2,000 people, flooded one-third of Pakistan and costed $40 billion to the economy of impoverished South Asian countries.
