Bangladesh – US tariff negotiations end without breakthroughs; Continue dialogue

The second round of three-day tariff negotiations between Bangladesh and the United States failed to end.
“The two countries reached some agreements on the third and final day of the second round of trade negotiations. However, some issues remained unresolved. Both sides believed that cross-troop negotiations would continue between them. Then, the representatives of the two countries would negotiate again,” Bangladesh’s chief advisor said in a statement on Saturday.
It added: “The discussion can be held in practice and face to face. The time and date are expected to be resolved soon. Trade advisers, secretary and other secretaries will return to the country tomorrow. They will set out again if necessary.”
“After three days of talks, business consultant Sheikh Bashir Uddin and security consultant Khalilur Rahman were optimistic that a positive position could be achieved within the prescribed time,” the statement said.
Business consultant Sheikh Bashir Uddin leads Bangladesh. National Security Advisor Dr. Khalilur Rahman and the special assistant of principal adviser Faiz Tayyab actually participated from Dhaka. Senior government officials and experts actually attended the meeting.
Earlier, two days before the July 9 deadline, U.S. President Donald Trump sent a letter to Bangladesh, imposing a 35% tariff. According to the letter, the tariffs will come into effect on August 1.
“We have had years to discuss the transactional relationship with Bangladesh and concluded that we must get rid of these long-term and very persistent trade deficits brought about by Bangladesh’s tariff and non-tariff policies and trade barriers. Unfortunately, our relationship is far from accident. The letter reads that the states are separated from all sectors of tariffs.
“Please understand that the 35% figure is much less than the amount required to eliminate the difference in our trade deficit with your country…If for any reason you decide to raise tariffs, then, no matter the number you choose to upgrade, we will be added to the 35% of our charges,” it added. ”
