American Nishesh Basavareddy recorded his first victory at the 2025 Next Generation ATP Finals hosted by PIF in a roller-coaster four-set match against Dino Prizmic in Jeddah on Wednesday.
The 20-year-old played his first match in his own box with new coach Gilles Cervara, earning his first tour-level victory since Hangzhou in mid-September.
After saving three set points in the second set, sixth seed Basava Reddy failed to hold on late in the third set, his only loss of serve in the match. But he immediately broke serve in the fourth game and won 4-2, 4-3(7), 3-4(3), 4-2.
“I feel great,” Basavareddy said. “It means a lot to get your first win in the round robin, and it’s good to try and win in as few sets as possible, so I’m happy to get it done in four games. I think it’s good to have that experience, but we haven’t played this format in a year, so there’s still a lot of adjustments to make. Every set is fast, and there’s a break like the last set. A break completely changes the momentum.”
The world No. 167 picked up his eighth tour-level win of the season and joins Prizmic, second-seeded Belgian Alexander Blockx and 18-year-old Justin Engel of Germany, who will play on day one at King Abdullah Sports City.
Talking about his new partner with Sevara, Basavareddy said: “We have done a lot of work on fitness. I have started working with a new fitness coach, Gilles has known him for a long time. I have also put a lot of effort into serving. Knowing that he has gone through the cycle of being world number one when he was young and winning a Grand Slam with Daniel, it boosts my confidence. But every player is different.”
