Three days, still counting.
The Next Generation ATP Finals presented by PIF kick off on Wednesday in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, and American Nishesh Basavareddy is one of the 20-and-under rising stars to get a taste of the conditions at King Abdullah Sports City on Sunday.
The Newport Beach, Calif., native returned to the eight-man tournament for a second year, but for the first time coach Gilles Cervara was in his box. The 20-year-old invited the Frenchman, Daniil Medvedev’s former long-term coach, to join his squad in early December.
“Obviously he has a long and successful relationship with Daniel, who was a great player before they started working together, but they did a lot of great things together,” Basavareddy told ATPTour.com.
“I think experience at the highest level can help me progress in my career. It’s not just tennis; he’s interested in everything. He’s hardworking and professional in areas like nutrition and fitness, which will help me.”
This year’s two-time ATP Challenger Champion Dino Prizmic of Croatia trains with Spain’s 19-year-old Rafael Jodar, who qualified for Jeddah after winning three Challenger events in the final three months of the season. Both players are participating in the tournament for the first time.
The 6-foot-4 Belgian Alexander Blockx hit a series of devastating forehands against this season’s four-time Challenger champion Nicolai Budkov Kjaer of Norway.
Germany’s 18-year-old Justin Engel trains with fellow countryman and former Top 100 player Michael Kohlmann.
The draw and first-day schedule will be set later on Sunday.
All eight players will compete in the group stage over three days from Wednesday to Friday, with the semi-finals on Saturday and the final on Sunday.
Past tournament winners include Jannik Sinner, Carlos Alcaraz and Stefanos Tsitsipas.
