“This will not be a world war, this will be an economic war”: Trump sends new warning to Putin
U.S. President Donald Trump warned on Tuesday that Russia could face “severe economic punishment” if President Vladimir Putin is reluctant to engage in peace talks with Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
“This is not a world war, but it will be an economic war. An economic war will be bad – for Russia, I don’t want that.” He said he would keep in mind the “very serious” measures in mind if the conflict is in trouble, citing the loss of lives of thousands of people every week.
Trump is pressing how long he will give Putin before the show, saying only that the steps he is considering are “very serious”. Despite his campaign promises to end the Ukrainian war “on the first day,” the battles remain rarely resolved. His August 15 summit with Putin in Anchorage was called a potential breakthrough and did not make any progress.

Putin-Zelensky’s negotiations remain stagnant
The Anchorage conference restored hopes for direct negotiations between Putin and Zelenskyy, the first since Russia’s full-scale invasion three years ago. But no summit was scheduled. While the White House insists Putin has agreed, Moscow denied that. “This agenda is not ready yet,” Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told the foreign media news channel.
Trump also expanded his pressure campaign to countries that still buy Russian oil. On Wednesday, Washington officially doubled its tariffs on Indian goods, raising tariffs from 25% to 50%. The move is linked to New Delhi’s oil imports from Moscow, one of India’s toughest trade shocks in years.
So far, Trump has not taken similar measures against China and other purchases of Russian crude oil.

Trump’s frustration
Even with Russia’s conversation with Putin, the Russian strike continued. He also accused Kyiv of saying Zelenskyy was “not completely innocent” and accusing him of being unhappy for our aid and unwilling to compromise. When asked about Russia’s reluctance to sign the deal, Trump said: “Everyone is in posture.”
On August 18, Trump’s idea of a peace summit emerged on a phone call with Putin, and a few days later, chaired talks with European leaders on long-term security assurances in Washington. Zelenskyy later said he hoped to provide those assurances supported by the U.S. and the EU “in the coming days.”
