BDO rejects “baseless” virus claim for unauthorized transactions

BDO Unibank, Inc. Viral social media posts accusing system of compromise and insiders of unauthorized transactions are unfounded, and that is unfounded.
“BDO has established different features designed to protect customer accounts. These controls will be invalid if customers ignore warning signs and messages sent by banks through official channels,” SY-LED Bank said in a statement.
On September 15, content creator Maria Jamira Christiana Gonzalez Berenguer, known as Jana Berenguer, claimed that her three bank accounts were allegedly hacked after her balance dropped significantly.
Ms Berenguer said she did not receive a one-time password (OTP) for a transaction that took place around noon.
“The maximum amount of online transactions is P50,000 to P100,000, but they were able to withdraw nearly P200,000,” she said in the Philippines.
The client said in the initial call with the bank that the case was dismissed as a hacker because she used the account’s QR code for the business.
BDO said in a statement that it repeatedly tried to interact with Ms. Berenger but was rejected.
Through its own investigation, the bank said the password was reset to be recorded on a customer’s account on September 14, and then the device was registered.
The day before the report event occurred, reset and device registration were verified by OTP on the registered device.
“The cell phone number used to receive OTP has not changed. The official device of the customer is still the device that receives official customer communications,” said BDO.
It added that login and registration alerts have also been sent to customers, as well as transaction alerts sent six hours before the incident was reported via the BDO hotline.
The bank also noted that the client admitted in another media interview that her mobile device was “in the hands of others at some point.”
“The bank reiterates that the transfer restrictions have not been bypassed and that our security controls remain,” it said. “BDO’s system remains secure, without any evidence of violations or internal participation.” – Almira Louise S. Martinez
