New preliminary round rules will come into effect in 2026

The ATP Board of Directors has approved the introduction of new hot-match rules, which will come into effect from the 2026 season, aligning the ATP’s approach with that of the WTA and enhancing the protection of players playing in extreme conditions.

The new rules are based on wet-bulb temperature (WBGT) and introduce clear thresholds for cooling measures and suspensions in best-of-three singles matches.

Main provisions

10 minutes cool down break
In the first two rounds of best-of-three singles matches, cooling measures will be implemented when the WBGT reaches 30.1°C or higher. Once activated, either player can request a 10-minute cooling-off break after the second set, and applies to both players in singles matches.

During breaks, players can use cooling measures, rehydrate, change clothes, shower and receive coaching under the supervision of ATP medical staff.

Pause the game
When WBGT exceeds 32.2°C, competition will be suspended.

Player health and safety
The new heat rules provide a structured, medically supported approach to managing extreme heat, with the aim of safeguarding player health while improving conditions for spectators, officials, players and event staff.
