Bonn climate negotiation summary, setting the stage for Brazilian major conference

Ten-day negotiations in the German city of Bonn lay the foundation for the United Nations Conference on Climate Change in Brazil in late November.

Germany’s Secretary of State for Climate Jochen Flasbarth described the Bonn climate conference as a stakeholder middle-aged meeting, which was a “important reality check.”

Flasbarth told the DPA that it must now be reflected in specific new climate plans in about 200 countries and efforts to limit global warming must be reflected.

“This is because in 2025, all countries will be required to submit these plans and outline how to further reduce their emissions from climate damage, which are in line with the 1.5-degree limit by 2035,” he said.

Frasbass said some countries have proposed strategies, while the EU and many others are still working on it.

More than 5,000 delegates participated in the negotiations in Bonn. The city is home to the United Nations Secretariat for Climate Change, which coordinates international climate policy.

The annual talks are seen as a key step in shaping the global climate agenda ahead of the main event held in the Brazilian city of Bellem in November, known as COP30.
